Hemodialysis is a treatment that filters and purifies the blood using a machine when the kidneys can no longer do so effectively. A special filter called a dialyzer (often called an “artificial kidney”) removes waste products, extra salts, and excess water from the blood, then returns the cleaned blood to the body.
During treatment, blood flows gently from the body through soft tubes into the dialyzer, where it is cleaned, and is then returned safely. This helps control blood pressure, fluid balance, and important minerals in the body. For people with kidney failure, regular hemodialysis takes over a vital role that the kidneys can no longer perform.
Your nephrologist may recommend hemodialysis when the kidneys lose most of their ability to function. Common reasons include:
End-stage kidney disease (ESRD) — advanced, irreversible kidney failure
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) that has progressed to a critical stage
Acute kidney injury — sudden, severe loss of kidney function

Hemodialysis needs a reliable point of access to the bloodstream. Our team selects and creates the most suitable option for each patient:
AV Fistula — the preferred long-term access, created by joining an artery and vein, usually in the arm.
AV Graft — a soft tube used when an AV fistula is not suitable.
Central Venous Catheter — used for urgent or temporary dialysis access.
Maintenance (In-Centre) Hemodialysis — regular sessions in our dialysis unit.
Emergency Dialysis — prompt treatment for acute kidney injury and critical situations.
